The intercooler end tanks on earlier 2.0T engines also develop leaks at the crimped seams. Smoke testing the charge system is the fastest way to find these leaks.

6. Turbo Bearing Failure

If the turbo shaft bearings are worn, the compressor and turbine wheels contact their housings, creating a grinding noise and dramatically reducing efficiency. Check for shaft play by reaching into the turbo inlet (with the engine off) and wiggling the compressor wheel. Any perceptible play means the turbo needs rebuilding or replacing.
