Ignore "lifetime fluid" claims.

Drain-and-Fill (Recommended)
Drop the pan, drain the fluid, replace the filter, reinstall the pan, refill with new fluid. This replaces about 40-50% of the total fluid (the rest stays in the torque converter and cooler lines). Safe, simple, and what most techs recommend.
Machine Flush
A machine connects to the cooler lines and exchanges all the fluid while the engine runs. Replaces nearly 100% of the fluid. Controversial because:

- New transmission filter and gasket (if dropping the pan)

The Procedure
- Warm up the transmission. Drive for 10 minutes. Warm fluid drains better and carries more contaminants out.
- Lift the vehicle safely on jack stands or a lift. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
- Place drain pan under the transmission pan.
- If there's a drain plug: Remove it and let the fluid drain completely (10-15 minutes).
- If there's no drain plug: Loosen all the pan bolts. Remove the rear bolts first, then slowly loosen the front bolts so the pan tilts back and fluid pours out the rear edge in a controlled manner.
- Remove the pan completely. Clean it with brake cleaner. Inspect the magnet at the bottom -- fine metallic paste is normal; chunks or large flakes indicate internal wear.
- Replace the filter. Pull the old filter straight down (it usually just press-fits onto the valve body). Install the new filter and O-ring.
- Clean the pan mating surfaces. Remove old gasket material.
- Install new gasket and pan. Torque bolts in a star pattern to spec (usually 8-12 ft-lbs -- don't overtighten or you'll crack the pan or strip threads).
- Refill through the dipstick tube (or fill plug on sealed transmissions). Add the same amount you drained. Start the engine, shift through all gears, and recheck the level.

Use the correct fluid.
Transmission fluid is NOT universal. Using the wrong spec can cause shuddering, slipping, harsh shifts, and permanent damage. Always check your owner's manual or the dipstick cap for the correct specification. When in doubt, use the OEM fluid from the dealer.
